A spectacle lens has an Rx of -4.50 – 1.50 x 045 and has a base curve of +2.00. What is the lens clock reading on the concave surface of the lens along the 135 degree meridian?” was the final question at the 2016 Varilux® Optometry Student Bowl™Evan Andrews gave the winning answer of-8.00 Diopters.winning him 1st place at this year’s OSB and 1000$! This is the first time that the Michigan College of Optometry (MCO) has taken home the Crystal trophy!

Here are a few words from Evan:

It’s been something like a week and a half now and I still feel the lingering flickers of adrenaline. This has got to be one of the greatest experiences I’ve had: the sound tsunami of the crowd, the anticipation of each question, sharing in the excitement of the other competitors, and, most of all, my fellow MCO students going absolutely bezoomny right down front. If nothing else, I will never ever forget how it felt to have them all cheering me on. Everyone says half the contest is just being the one to buzz in; but all credit for the other half goes to the amazing faculty of MCO and the excellent education I’ve received there. I’m very grateful to everyone who’s been instrumental in putting on the student bowl as well, especially to the namesake of the newly-named Ventura Cup. Thank you all for this opportunity and here’s hoping we keep the trophy in Big Rapids a few more times.

The second place winner, Marshall Ward, class of 2017 at Pennsylvania College of Optometry, received $750 and third place was a tie between, Derek Hennig class of 2017 at Southern College of Optometry and Amy Cuevas class of 2017 at The University of the Incarnate Word who both received $500.

The Southern College of Optometry was chosen as this year’s Spirit Award winner and will create next year’s rules video. For the first time ever there was a tie for the social media-based Virtual Spirit Award between Northeastern State University, Oklahoma College of Optometry and University of Waterloo, School of Optometry. This year’s winner of the AOSA t-shirt design competition went to University of Houston, College of Optometry.
