As the student contestants begin their journeys towards Optometry’s Meeting in Boston, we wish them the safest of travels! We also hope that you all can join us at the Varilux® Optometry Student Bowl™ on Thursday 7:30 PM. We have a band playing all night, along with raffle prizes including Volk lenses, Samsung tablets, sunglasses, and lots more! So have fun, dress up and come cheer loud for your school’s contestant!
Kenneth Van is the OSB contestant for Western University of Health Sciences – College of Optometry (WUCO), which is not too far from his hometown — Simi Valley, CA. His fun fact is that he has a concave chest. When not flexing his pectus excavatum he enjoys board games, video games, and watching superhero movies. Kenneth’s is goals are to become an optometrist, start a family, buy a house, and own a small size indoor dog. Come cheer him on in Boston for the optometry student bowl!
Karen Levy is in the Class of 2017 and will be representing the SUNY College of Optometry at OSB this year! Karen’s from Beacon, NY and her hobbies include running, lifting, hiking and going to concerts. She claims to be the only person in the world who prefers the end pieces in a loaf of bread. Her goal is to take down the competition and bring home the win for SUNY! Cheer her on in Boston for OM16!
Brent Hume is in the Class of 2017, Indiana University School of Optometry (IUSO). His hometown lies in Sheridan, IN. Brent loves swimming and playing Clash of Clans with his son. His fun fact: “I was the only person on my high school football team who needed a small helmet.” Brent’s goal is to convince his wife they don’t need 4 more children! Let’s give it up for Brent at OSB!
Meet Courtney Stuck from The New England College of Optometry (NECO), Class of 2017. Courtney’s hometown is in South Bend, Indiana. Her hobbies include building overly elaborate Halloween costumes, making perfectly-executed Chewbacca noises and drinking orange mocha frappuccinos with her male model friends! Courtney’s really good at eating competitions, she says “I beat 9 other men at a pie-eating contest by eating almost 2 entire 5 pound pies in under 5 minutes and to quote my inspiration, Ron Swanson “Why is everyone else so bad at eating?” Her goal is to make her mom proud by winning OSB 2016 and successfully graduate next year as a passionate optometrist who can finally have an entire personal pizza delivered and when it arrives gently whisper “Ahhh, just what the doctor ordered.” Come cheer on Courtney at OSB!
Kelly Cleary is from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry (UABSO), Class of 2017. She comes from Albany, GA and continues to enjoy running, working in the yard with her husband — Ben, cooking, skiing, and playing with her pups, Nelli and Petey. Kelly’s fun fact is “my 1st time having eyes dilated was optometry school, and I have a CHRPE that looks like a yin yang symbol according to my classmates.” Her goal is “to run a half marathon every year until I’m 85! …then I’ll consider running a full marathon ;)” We wish Kelly the best at OSB!
Stephen Ridder is representing the Marshall B. Ketchum University, School of Optometry (MKBU), also known as, the Southern California College of Optometry (SCCO) and is currently in the Class of 2017! His hometown lies in Anaheim, California. Stephen does not turn down a chance to go backpacking, rock climbing, cycling, hiking, and explore the great outdoors!
Besides winning the student bowl, Stephen wants to backpack the Laugavegurinn trail in Iceland (rumored to be where Tolkien visited immediately before writing the Lord of the Rings novels). We welcome Stephen to the Varilux® Optometry Student Bowl™!
Evan Andrews, Class of 2017, will be representing the Michigan College of Optometry (MCO) at the 2016 Varilux® Optometry Student Bowl™. From Kalamazoo, MI, he actually began university as a theater major specializing in sound design. Evan’s hobbies include guitar-esque instruments, handicrafts of minimal usefulness, European martial arts, and making silly voices. His goal “Unite the world under a global shadow-government or enter private practice with a focus on specialty contact lenses, whichever calls me back first.” Come cheer him on at OSB!!
Mohamed El- Mustapha! aka “Moe”, aka “Rain Man” is the contestant from the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico (IAUPR) School of Optometry. The Rain Man hails from Alberta, Canada and enjoys swimming, running, and playing FIFA on X-box (Not PlayStation!). A Fun Fact about Moe, is that he was married at 22 years old, and thus his life goal is to provide the best for his family and become a successful doctor. We wish the Rain Man the best on the upcoming Varilux® Optometry Student Bowl™ !!
